Brighton and Newhaven Fish Sales (BNFS)
BNFS was established as a fish market to serve the needs of the local fishing fleet in 1975 and has operated a fish market on our current site since 1989. We currently serve the needs of around 45 local inshore fishing vessels and we also own and operate 3 vessels of our own.
Our business falls into four distinct departments, all complementing one-another.
Fishing Vessel Ownership
We own and operate a fleet of fishing vessels from our premises in Shoreham Harbour. These are inshore vessels that pursue the seasonal species found off the shores of the South East of England. These vessels along with a further 40 owner-operator vessels, supply our fish market.

For many years now the local community has wanted to be able to purchase their fish directly from our market. In order that they could access high quality, local fish and shellfish, we set up a shop counter within the fish market building. This became more and more popular and in March 2009 we opened our new dedicated fish shop, adjacent to the market, in order to give our retail customers more room and more choice. |
Trade Account Department
High quality fish and high levels of service remain our core values in this department.
We currently serve approximately 150 pubs, clubs, hotels and restaurants as well as private catering companies, all located in the South East and London areas. We have built up a loyal client base within this sector, who demand high quality local seafood of which they know the provenance.
The key to delivering day caught quality fish to our trade customers is personal communication. We encourage all of our customers to call daily to discuss their orders and in this way we can advise them of what was landed that day and if there are any daily special offers available. This personal approach ensures that our customers can offer their customers the very freshest, local fish, delivered to their door within 24 hours of landing.
Using our fleet of modern refrigerated vans, we deliver to our customers 6 days a week, and also offer a "second delivery" service within the Brighton area. Again communication plays a key role in our delivery service and our drivers keep in personal contact with our customers to ensure contentment.
Wholesale Fish Market
All the fish landed by our fleet is sorted, electronically graded and weighed in our modern fish market building, before it is offered for sale to our clients. At present, 90% of the vessels landing to BNFS are small inshore "day-boats", which land fish to the market within hours of capture. This ensures that our fish and shellfish are of the highest quality and freshness.
Our client base for the wholesale department includes fish shops, pubs, clubs, hotels, restaurants, wholesale and catering companies throughout the UK, high-street supermarkets and export customers across Europe. Our products are packaged to the individual client's requirements before being shipped to their destination using either our own transport or via dedicated fish transport infrastructure.
As a fish business we are uniquely positioned in our Industry as we are the only UK fish market that owns fish quotas.
This quota ownership allows us to be the only fish market in the UK that can truly guarantee that all the fish landed through our establishment is legal and caught within all UK and European catch limit regulations.
This guarantee of provenance is vital to our discerning customers, who insist upon fish supplies being 100% legal and caught within all current EU Fisheries legislation. In practise this means that we ensure that all boats landing to BNFS have sufficient quota of all species that they are landing. This applies to both the under 10 meter fleet and those above.
With sustainable working practices such as these, together with all of our fleet of vessels currently being assessed for the "Responsible Fishing Scheme", BNFS pride ourselves as being in the forefront of the movement to achieve a truly sustainable, local fishing industry. We are heavily involved in the management of the local and National Fishing Industry, sitting on various committees that shape current and future fisheries management policy, and as such we are well placed to continue to deliver high quality fish and shellfish with full provenance, well into the future.
No other market or merchant can give this guarantee of provenance as no other has full control of the fundamental, basic element that legality depends upon.
